Diet is an essential factor in preventing and combating the growth of cancer cells. Several studies show that the ketogenic diet can be favorable as support for the treatment of cancer.
Ovarian cancer is one of the most diagnosed cancers in the US, and every day more women are diagnosed with this condition. Conventional treatments offer solutions but with a high risk of toxicity as a side effect for the organism.
The Basis of The Ketogenic Diet and Its Effect On Metabolism
The macronutrient distribution of the ketogenic diet is composed of a high percentage of fats, regular protein consumption, and restriction of up to 5% carbohydrates.
The ketogenic diet aims to provide the necessary conditions for cells to replace glucose as the primary source of energy for fat metabolization. Fats, in the absence of carbohydrates, produce ketone bodies as a source of energy.
Tumor cells need to metabolize large amounts of glucose to live, while they cannot work with ketone bodies and fatty acids. Thus ketone bodies may be incompatible with the reproduction of tumor cells. 
The Metabolic Origin Of Cancer
The source of the disease occurs through a series of genetic mutations that result in the appearance of cells that replicate uncontrollably.
Cancer mutations are as personal as fingerprints, and since they do not follow a defined pattern, it is complicated to combat it.
Currently, some researchers have proposed changing the paradigm for the development of effective treatments in the fight against cancer, by suggesting that this disease, despite its genetic components, is a metabolic disease.
All cancers share the same characteristic: mitochondrial damage.
Due to this mitochondrial damage, the apoptosis process does not occur (the programmed death of the cells). Causing the cell to replicate uncontrollably, becoming immortal. 
But this point is important because cells with damaged mitochondria can only consume glucose, while healthy cells can feed on glucose and fat.
How Does The Energetic Metabolism Of Healthy Cells Work?
The cells mainly use two metabolic systems to obtain energy: oxidative phosphorylation (respiration or aerobic metabolism, with the presence of oxygen) and phosphorylation at the substrate level (anaerobic glycolysis or fermentation, without the presence of oxygen)
Oxidative phosphorylation is the primary energy metabolism used by healthy cells because it is the most efficient mechanism and allows up to 15 times more ATP to be obtained from glucose.
Oxidative phosphorylation is performed in the mitochondria, which is the “energy center” of any metabolic process where oxygen is involved.
In the mitochondria, the primary metabolic fuels are oxidized: glucose, fatty acids, or ketone bodies.
The second metabolic system, anaerobic glycolysis, is used in some organs, usually for short periods, during which a temporary oxygen deprivation forces the cell to use a different metabolic process.
Anaerobic glycolysis occurs in particular situations; for example, it occurs in the muscles when intense exercise depletes oxygen stores.
Glycolysis ferments glucose. It produces lactic acid, which in some organs, such as the heart, can be used directly, again, as fuel, but that is generally a waste product that is taken to the liver to transform it back into glucose and return it to the bloodstream.
Few cell types permanently use anaerobic glycolysis. An example of this exception is erythrocytes or red blood cells, which lack mitochondria and, therefore, can only metabolize glucose by fermentation, not by oxidation.
Glucose metabolization is a less efficient process than breathing (cell respiration), but it is a quick process. Therefore, it is considered an exceptional mechanism to avoid potentially dangerous situations for the cell.
Glycolysis is a fermentative process that happens in the cytosol, outside the mitochondria. Metabolic fuels that can be fermented are glucose, and some amino acids such as glutamine, but fatty acids or ketone bodies cannot be fermented.
Energy Metabolism Of Cancer Cells. How Do They Get The Energy To Reproduce?
The mitochondria of the cells suffer some type of damage (structural, in the mitochondrial DNA, or their lipid membrane), which prevents them from functioning correctly, these cellular organelles controls apoptosis (programmed cell suicide).
By losing their mitochondrial functionality, cells can no longer comply with apoptosis and can become “immortal,” increasing the risk of numerous genetic mutations and uncontrolled cell reproduction.

The metabolism of mitochondria is oxidative, so, regardless of the amounts of oxygen available, the cell loses the ability to use oxidative phosphorylation of glucose, fatty acids or ketone bodies to obtain ATP and has to resort to glucose fermentation or of amino acids, like glutamine, for energy.
In situations of hypoxia, when there are low levels of oxygen available, the body synthesizes a molecule called HIF-1 alpha (induced hypoxia factor), this factor causes cell proliferation and is present in glycolysis processes.

Tumor cells may have enough oxygen. Still, they cannot use it due to mitochondrial damage; this means that they are permanently in hypoxia, causing the synthesis of large amounts of HIF-1 alpha, producing a dangerous situation that can cause the proliferation of cancer cells: the uncontrolled proliferation of cells that cannot comply with apoptosis.
Since glycolysis is a very inefficient metabolic process, the tumor cell needs to consume large amounts of glucose to maintain its energy levels and proliferation — very abundant glucose in the body of those who follow a traditional diet.
The tumor must create new blood vessels through a process known as angiogenesis. This process needs an inflammatory state to be able to carry out. High insulin levels favor the inflammatory state.
Can Cancer Be Cured With The Ketogenic Diet?
Curing or preventing cancer is not a simple process, such as restricting the supply of glucose to cancer cells; cancer can activate different metabolic pathways to ensure its viability and development.
But the partial blockage of the “fuel” of cancer cells is a significant victory, which can be achieved by taking vital actions, such as following the ketogenic diet.
