It isn’t a big secret that whatever kind of water we are drinking can have a significant impact on our health. Tap water is usually the most obvious choice here. We all have access to it.

It comes with one catch, though. It is never as pure as one expects it to be. Recent research suggests that tap water can contain over 300 contaminants. What should we do in this case?

Go to the store every day and buy bottled pure water? Yes, we can certainly do that and spend a lot on gas and the water itself. Or, we can take a slightly less hassle-free route and turn to countertop water filters.

There are numerous types of water filters, and choosing one can be quite confusing.

Probably the most used, and very effective filters, connect directly to the water faucet. Among those in the market currently, we have decided to review the Aquasana AQ 4000W specifically, because we were impressed with the specifications.

Let’s take a look.

Aquasana Countertop Water Filter System AQ-4000W

Over the years, Aquasana has made quite a name for itself due to its reliable countertop drinking water filter system.

The filters have a simple mechanism that doesn’t require the help of any professional to install. Customers can set it up on their own without any tools. It also doesn’t take long to figure out how to use the filter.

The purpose of Aquasana countertop water filter is to be an effective, user-friendly filter, and from what we’ve seen of the filter, they have managed to so efficiently.

Let’s begin with the installation system.

The Installation Process For The Aq-4000 Filter

Usually, the under-counter filter has a complicated installation process that takes up much of the user’s time and money.

Countertop filters have always advertised its effectiveness in bypassing the hassle of installation by simply connecting it to a faucet with a valve.

The Aquasana countertop water filter is in no way different in this regard. The only thing the user needs to do is attach the hose ends of the valve to the filter so that water can reach the filter and the purification process can begin.

You don’t need to call for a plumber or for the company’s customer service to help you out. At most, it takes two minutes to get the whole system running.

If you take a look at the countertop filter, you should be able to figure out how to install it. Even if you don’t understand, though, the package comes with a manual, and the installation process is explained in detail online as well.

The best thing about easy installation is the portability that comes along with it. The filter is designed to be sitting on your kitchen countertop. If you were to move home or had to go somewhere for a long period of time, you can just detach the filter from the faucet and take it along with you.

As long as the place you are staying at has a faucet and a continuous supply of water, your countertop water filter will do its job.

The only thing you can remotely consider a problem with the Aquasana AQ-4000W is that not all categories of faucets would be compatible with the filter.

However, even this little problem is taken care of as the countertop filter package from Aquasana comes with brass adapters for most faucets.

The exception, are the pull out sprayer type faucets. In that case you need an Aquasana Under Sink Water Filter

The Performance Of The Filter

The first thing we noted about the company is how diligent they were with their filtration system. They go through extreme lengths to make sure their filters receive proper certification. For the customers, it is the prime assurance of quality.

The certification tells you exactly what kind of filtration you will be bringing home, and you can trust the water has been purified exactly the way company claims.

Among the certification bodies, NSF is in charge of testing and handing out certifications to various consumer products, most of which are related to food and water.

As for Aquasana AQ-4000W, NSF International has given its certification for meeting NSF and ANSI standards, mainly 53, 42, and 401. Also, the newer standard P473 which removes the “forever chemicals” known as PFOA and PFOS, that build up in your body over time.

If you don’t know much about how NSF certification works, you probably don’t grasp how hard it is to get these certifications. The certification tells us several things about the countertop filter.

For one, the filter should be able to easily decrease the total count of heavy metal in water, including dangerous mercury and lead.

Tap water can have a high amount of organic chemicals mixed in them, such as herbicides and pesticides, and this filter removes them all.

It also gets rid of certain pharmaceuticals. These common prescribed drugs are not removed by city water departments.

It has a 99.99% removal rate when it comes to giardia and cryptosporidium.

Another unexpected benefit of getting an NSF certification is that the public can easily access the result of the test. It’s a common thing for water filter manufacturers to make huge claims about what their countertop water filter can do.

However, rarely do you see conclusive evidence that supports their claims. That is not the case when a company gets NSF certification for its water filter.

If you have any curiosity about exactly what kind of work the Aquasana AQ-4000 is capable of, all you need to search the test report.

However, it’s a lengthy report that you might not feel all that enthusiastic about reading. So, to make it easy for you to understand, we can say that the Aquasana AQ-4000 has a 95 percent rate of reducing the overall contaminants that one finds in the water.

What is the Aquasana AQ-4000 composed of?

For the Aquasana AQ-4000, a filtration system known as Claryum is used. It’s a two-stage system and has a reputation for practically forcing its enemies into submission.

According to Aquasana, the Claryum filter media will last ten times longer at getting rid of contaminants compared to well-known pitcher filters in the market.

When we think about how the installation process involves only screwing the filter to the faucet, the filter seems more than worth it.

The two-stage filters have a total of 4 separate steps. At first, the activated carbon system works to purify the water of pesticides, herbicides, and plenty of other organic chemicals.

The Catalytic Carbon is here to help you get rid of the chloramines and chlorine in the water. It has a 97 percent success rate. It is also the filtration media that significantly raises the taste of the water.

Ion exchange occurs to rid the water of harmful lead and mercury.

Finally, there is the Sub-Micron Mechanical filter stage. This one takes care of asbestos and cysts that are chlorine resistant.

Once the filtration has been done, you get purified water. However, the countertop water filter leaves behind the beneficial minerals.

So, while you are getting rid of all contaminants, the water still has its mineral content. Which is excellent for your health. Not to mention, the water tastes amazing.

What About The Flow Rate?

The diverter for the filter has to be directly attached to the faucet. However, when the filter is not being used, the faucet works like normal.

When filtering water, yes, the flow rate is lower. However, 30 gallons in an hour isn’t a bad rate at all. You won’t ever have a problem accessing fresh and pure water for drinking and cooking when you need it.

At this point, we should also mention a key point that differentiates the Aquasana AQ-4000 from other countertop water filters. A lot of those currently in the market rely heavily on reverse osmosis.

Reverse osmosis systems dump 3-4 gallons of water down the drain for every gallon produced. That is not the case for this system. You won’t be wasting any water with the Aquasana AQ-4000.

What Did The Aquasana Customers Like?

Taste of The Water – Not one customer has expressed any dissatisfaction with the taste of the water. They really liked the pure taste of the water once it was filtered. In fact, some complimented it as the best water they have tasted in a while from a countertop water filter.

Brass Adapters – This one is an unexpected tool that came with the Aquasana countertop water filter that customers liked. The brass adapters allowed the customer to connect the filter to most faucets. With the exception of the sprayer type faucets.

It would have been a shame if they brought an amazing filter only to find out they can’t even connect it to a kitchen faucet without difficulty.

Color Code For Hose – Previously, the Aquasana filter used to have white ends on both the hoses. This time, the hoses are separated into blue and white, making it easier for the user to complete the installation process.

Customer Service – The customer service from Aquasana is one the customers were particularly impressed with. They were quite helpful in figuring out different details of the filter.

They noted that the representatives are more than happy to talk customers through the filter replacement process. Even though it requires nothing more than a simple twist.

What Didn’t Customers Like?

More Expensive Than Faucet Filters – While customers are beyond satisfied with the overall features of the product, customers do find the price a bit more than they are usually willing to pay.

Especially when you compare it to a pitcher filter, customers note that the price is way higher and the overall maintenance cost is higher too.

On the brighter side, the filters last much longer than the smaller direct connected faucet filters. It is also much more convenient.

Life Span – It has a capacity of 450 gallons in its lifetime. So, once these 450 gallons of water have been purified, the filter would be too cluttered with impurities to work properly.

Usually, for the 450 gallons to be purified, it takes 6 months. Customers who use a large amount of water or have a big family will need to replace filters more often.

The Material – Some customers didn’t like that the main parts of the filter are plastic. Customers would have preferred other materials even though the NSF certification proves the plastic is safe regardless.

  1. Very interested in this filter, but have a concern with the hose hooked to faucet end. Does it get in the way for moving when rinsing dishes and chores when it comes to washing dishes. It looks it could be a problem.

    • Since it is attached at the faucet, that means your faucet spout is a little lower. If you aren’t having problems washing big dishes now, this probably will be O.K.
Also, the hose can restrict the movement of the faucet a little bit – depending where the filter is located on the countertop. It was never a problem for me.
I used this type of system for years, and very quickly adjusted to using it. Generally it isn’t a problem, except for very large or awkward shaped items. That was just, because the faucet was a bit lower. It didn’t stop me from washing anything.
If you have a deep sink, that would be much better than a shallow sink.
Likewise, if you have a taller faucet that would be good.
This would not be a good choice for any designer faucet that doesn’t accept standard sized aerators.
